Geneve - Antiquorum's thematic auction of November 17, 2002 at the Hotel
Bristol (Geneve) will be dedicated to the "Evolution of Forms and
Design in Watches" from the 16th century to the end of the 20th century.

One of the highlights showing the evolution
in the quest for new design in wristwatches is an extremely rate
Patek Philippe, Ref.3424, an asymmetrical men's wristwatch, in 18K
white gold, made in the late 1950's. This watch differs from others
in the Ref.3424 series for the hour index on the dial, which are
very different from anything that had been done before. The hour
indexes are overtly elongated while in the normal series they are
continuous lines that intersect in the center, forming a sort of
spider web motif. However, elongated hour indexes are not typical
of this period and interestingly these only became more widely used
from the 1960's. This wristwatch is especially important for its
asymmetrical case that is a turning point in wristwach design and
in the quest for new forms - it abandons classical forms and remains
elegant.
The catalogue of the thematic auction presents
historical and stylistic context in which watches and clocks were
made, compiled by Ms.Catherine Cardinal, former curator of the "Institut
l'Homme et le Temps - Musee International d'Horlogerie" at
La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland.
