BASEL 2002 FINAL REPORT

(April 22, 2002)

The Basel World Watch and Jewelry Show opened from April 4 to 11. The 2,195 exhibitors, from 40 countries, received 82,500 visitors during the 8 days. Despite a general dampening of the global economy and a difficult first quarter's trading, most exhibitors experienced increased orders during Basel 2002 and were optimistic that the latter half of 2002 would see an improvement in market conditions.

Mr.Rene Kamm, General Manager Global Exhibitions, said that "The new design concept that we have introduced this year - particularly in the prestige halls - has provided an excellent environment in which to conduct business. I am sure that by allowing exhibitors to more effectively showcase their latest creations and most popular collections we have created a climate in which trade can flourish, and the results of BASEL2002 confirm this belief."; "BASEL has also become a centre of attention for the international media. This year a record 1,966 media representatives from around the world also attended the event - up 1,500 from last year. This provides exhibitors with exceptional opportunities in the press".

This year, exhibitors occupied 95,197m2 (4% up from last year) stretching usable space to its maximum capacity by the use of second and third stories structurers. Although demand continued to exceed capacity, the BASEL management reduced exhibitor numbers from last year's 2,300 to 2,195, reflecting their desire to maintain and enhance the quality of the show experience.

By cuttirng down on exhibitor numbers, the average stand space was increased by a substantial 9% per exhibitor, providing a far more comfortable show environment for everyone.

Despite the extensive change programme, space continues to be an issue at BASEL. The management has decided the move of the Country Pavilions to a new and modern exhibition center in Zurich next year. This change can provide exhibitors more space, first class facilities and more hotel accommodation.

BASEL2003 takes place in Basel and Zurich (Hall of Universe) from April 3 - 10, 2003.
